  • Airlines, Routes and Pickup

Bond University is located on the Gold Coast which is approximately 500 miles north of Sydney (80 minute flight) and 43 miles south of Brisbane (55 minute drive).

    There are two airports:

    1) Brisbane International Airport (BNE) - 55 minute drive from campus

    2) Gold Coast Airport (OOL) - 20 minute drive from campus

Brisbane is the only international airport for direct flights from the USA and Canada and is therefore the recommend destination airport. The Gold Coast airport is only better if you connect via Sydney. It doesn't matter which airport you land at. We will pick you up.

Airlines that fly direct to Australia from the USA are:

Airlines that fly direct to Australia from Canada are:

Here are the most popular flight routes to Bond University:

    •
    • Option 1: USA or Canada to Brisbane (BNE) - QANTAS, Virgin Australia & Air Canada.
    • Option 2: USA or Canada to Sydney (SYD) with connection to Brisbane (BNE).
    • Option 3: USA or Canada to Sydney (SYD) with connection to Gold Coast (OOL).

The flight to Australia from the USA (West Coast) is about 13 hours. The flight from to Australia from Vancouver is about 15 hours. There is also a direct flight to Sydney from Dallas (Qantas) and Houson (United) which are both 16.5 hours. But it's typically best to fly from LAX, SFO or YVR and go direct to Brisbane (BNE).

A typical round trip coach airfare is $1,500-$2,000 + for 6 month fares and $1,200 for 30 day fares.

    Airport Pickup

We can pick you up at Brisbane airport or Gold Coast airport and drop you to your on-campus or off-campus housing (or hotel or anywhere you need to be dropped to). To book an airport pick-up, click here. If you don't use our airport pick-up service, here are your other options:

    •
    • From Brisbane, a shuttle will be about A$55 and a Taxi or Uber will be about A$120.
    • From the Gold Coast airport, a taxi or Uber will be about A$55.
    • If you do make your own arrangements, inform us of them so we can let you know about where to go when you arrive on campus.

  • Australian Cell Phone Service

We provide all students with their own Australian cell phone SIM card (before you depart) to use with your current phone. So you will know your phone number and be ready to make and receive calls as soon as you land.

  • Australian Bank Account

The big four banks in Australia are:

    • Westpac (ATM on campus)
    • ANZ
    • National Australia Bank
    • Commonwealth Bank

For your personal account in Australia, the best option is Westpac which has 2 ATM's on campus so will be fee-free for cash withdrawals.

Bond University banks with Westpac so will make it easier to pay fees and get any refunds electronically.

There is a Westpac branch just 1 mile from campus (at the mall) so you can open an account there or do it online at:

    http://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/bank-accounts/moving-to-australia/banking/

For long term students, having an Australian account is the best and saves on fees from using a foreign debit/credit card. In addition, you can choose the best time to wire funds when the exchange rate is good.

For short term stays (eg. 1 semester), setting up an Austalian bank account isn't necessary.

You can still use your current ATM, debit and credit cards in Australia just like you do at home. Your bank or card may charge a fee for "international transactions" but some accounts don't charge this. Check with your bank.

When you do use your card overseas, your bank will do the foreign exchange conversion and debit your account the equivalent amount in your home currency.

  • Power Adapters for Electronics

Australian power outlets and voltage is different than North America (230V vs 110V). Devices such as hair dryers, straightener's and curling irons will blow up when you plug them in so don't bother bringing any of these items at all. It's better to buy new ones in Australia. They are not expensive.

For electronics such as your laptop, tablet, camera, iPod and cell phone etc, these already have power converters built-in to the power cable so will plug in and work fine with just a wall outlet adapter. The wall outlets in Australia have angled prongs so you need the adapter to allow your North American power cable to plug into an Australian outlet. These are cheap and easy to buy in Australia, however, you may also choose to get one (or 2 or 3) before you leave.

    Here are some I recommend:

    • Amazon.com - basic adapter for Australia only.
    • Best Buy - multiple country adapter with USB charging port.
    • Amazon.com - multiple country adapter with surge protection.
    • Amazon.com - multiple country  adapter with USB charging port.
